Agricultural & Processed Food Products

A statutory organization created by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act of 1985 is the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Certain agricultural and processed food products must be developed and promoted for export, and this is the responsibility of the APEDA. Among the many services offered by the APEDA is the issuing of phytosanitary certificates for the export of plants and plant products. The Indian government has released comprehensive guidelines outlining the precise steps that food businesses of all stripes, including food service, transportation, and retail, must take to stop the COVID-19 virus from spreading. The APEDA's website contains export guidelines and protocols for a variety of agricultural and processed food items.

Identify the Regulatory Authority

Find out which regulatory body is in charge of regulating the registration of processed and agricultural food items. Regulatory authority in India is primarily the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Registration with the FSSAI

FSSAI registration is required for the majority of food products. There are two types of registrations offered by FSSAI: Basic and State/Central License. Your business's size and type will determine the type of registration you need.

Application Form

To register with the FSSAI, complete the relevant application form. On the official FSSAI website, the forms are accessible.

Document Submission

Get the necessary paperwork ready, including any business registration paperwork, and submit it.

  • A list of food items that need to be prepared or manufactured.
  • Plan for a food safety management system.
  • OEM certificate (NOC) (if applicable).
  • The milk or meat's source (if applicable).
  • A license as an importer (for food products imported).
  • Evidence that the premises are possessed.
Compliance with Labeling

Verify that your products' labels adhere to FSSAI requirements. Provide all necessary details, including the FSSAI license number, ingredients, and nutritional data.

Food Safety Management System (FSMS)

Adhere to FSSAI guidelines when putting in place a Food Safety Management System. A Food Safety Supervisor may need to be appointed, and good manufacturing practices may need to be followed.

Testing of Products

To make sure your products fulfill safety and quality standards, you must conduct mandatory testing on them in laboratories that have been notified by the FSSAI.

Payment of Fees

For FSSAI registration or licensing, remit the necessary fees. The type and size of the business determine the fee structure.

FSSAI Inspection

To ensure adherence to food safety regulations, the FSSAI may inspect your facility. Participate in the inspection procedure.

Certificate Issuance

The FSSAI will provide a registration or license certificate after all conditions are satisfied.

Export Conformance (if relevant)

Export laws must be followed and required certifications must be obtained if you intend to export agricultural and processed food products.
