Society Registration in India
Society Registration refers to the legal process of registering a group of individuals who come together with a shared purpose such as charity, education, cultural promotion, religion, social welfare, sports, or research. In India, societies are registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which provides them with legal identity and operational rights.
Once registered, a society becomes a separate legal entity, meaning it can own property, open bank accounts, enter into contracts, receive grants, and engage in lawful activities independent of its members. Society Registration is essential for credibility and mandatory for availing government schemes, tax exemptions, and donations under provisions like 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act.
