Trade License / Corporation License Registration in Chennai

A Trade License (also known as Corporation License or Business License) is an official permit issued by the local Municipal Corporation that allows businesses to legally operate in India. Any individual, shop, commercial establishment, or company engaged in trade or business activities must obtain this license before starting operations.

Applying for a Trade License must be completed within 30 days of starting the business. Once approved, the license is generally issued within 7–15 working days, depending on the respective Municipal Corporation. Trade Licenses are valid for one year and must be renewed annually between January 1st and March 31st.

A Trade License ensures that the business follows government standards related to safety, health, hygiene, public convenience, pollution control, and statutory compliance. Only individuals above 18 years with no criminal background and compliant business premises can apply.

Difference Between Trade License and Company Registration

Though both are required to legally operate a business in India, their purpose and legal impact differ:

  • Purpose: A Trade License authorizes a specific business activity at a particular location, while Company Registration creates a legal business entity under the Companies Act, 2013.
  • Validity: Trade License requires yearly renewal; Company Registration is permanent and does not expire.
  • Scope: Company registration defines ownership, liability, and legal structure; a Trade License ensures lawful operation and compliance with local civic regulations.

In many cases, both compliance requirements are mandatory because they serve different legal purposes within the Indian business ecosystem.
